EA Summit: New Zealand 2025 will take place on the Saturday 27 September 2025 at the Otago Christchurch Campus. (2 Riccarton Avenue) Applications are open, so apply now!

This Summit is the inaugural effective altruism (EA) conference organised to bring together the various NZ EA communities. Whether you have been involved with EA for years, or working in a relevant area and keen to explore, this is the best NZ opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and discover actionable ways to make an impact. You can expect:

  1. World-class speakers covering a broad range of cause areas, including global health, disaster-resilient food systems, AI safety, economics of charitable behavior, chicken welfare, and regulatory reform. These speakers bring deep connections to Aotearoa and diverse perspectives from both within and outside traditional EA circles.
  2. Spark collaborations and 1 on 1 meetings through our dedicated swapcard app.
  3. Leave with a network of professional contacts to easily reach out to for informal project feedback.

EANZ Speakers

  • Dr. David Denkenberger | Director at ALLFED, Associate Professor Mechanical Engineering UC

    • Dr David Denkenberger (3D) co-founded the Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED), which focuses on building resilience to civilization-disrupting events. He has authored or co-authored 155 publications, with over 5,000 combined citations, and is the most prolific author in the existential/global catastrophic risk field. As an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Canterbury, 3D works alongside his team of PhD students to develop resilient, critical disaster interventions to protect and preserve our long-term future. He has appeared twice on the 80,000 Hours podcast and is author of "Feeding Everyone No Matter What," a book outlining practical solutions for feeding humanity through extreme scenarios. His food work has been featured in over 25 countries, over 300 popular articles. He has given over 80 interviews/external presentations, including ones on resilience at Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University, University of Cambridge, and University of Oxford.
  • Marianne Macdonald | Executive Director of Animals Aotearoa

    • Marianne has over thirty years of experience working as an animal advocate both in the UK and Aotearoa. Animals Aotearoa works to reduce the suffering of farmed animals, with a strategic focus on improving the welfare of chickens through corporate adoption of the Better Chicken Commitment. Marianne previously held senior campaign roles at SAFE, where she was part of a team instrumental in securing all major NZ supermarkets and 90 food suppliers committing to phase-out cage eggs by 2027. By estimate this should improve the lives of more than 1.4 million hens.
  • Greg Sadler | CEO of Good Ancestors Policy

    • Greg is the CEO of Good Ancestors Policy (GAP), which has led work on a variety of areas from Australia’s National Immunisation Strategy, to COVID policy, to disaster preparedness and AI safety. GAP currently works with the Australian government to ensure advanced AI systems are well-governed and safe. Greg has over 15 years’ experience in the Australian Public Service, including at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Attorney-General’s Department. Greg has led teams performing a range of legal advice, policy development and risk assessment functions.
  • Dr. Bruce Tsai | Global Priorities Researcher

    • Dr. Bruce is a medical doctor and researcher whose work bridges the gap between global public health and the study of existential risks. After graduating with his MBChB from the University of Auckland he has held research positions at various organisations, including Rethink Priorities, Fortify Health, Screwworm Free Future and the Berkeley Existential Risk Initiative, where he collaborated with Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute. His career has involved contributions to public health policy, including work with the World Health Organisation presenting on universal health coverage and early on was part of a campaign successfully contributing to a quadrupling of Auckland's public transport budget. Bruce brings a multifaceted perspective to tackling the world's most pressing challenges.
  • Professor Stephen Knowles | Department of Economics, Otago Business School

    • Professor Stephen Knowles is an economist at the University of Otago with a research interest in global development and the economics of altruism and charitable giving. Using lab, online, and field experiments, he analyzes the key drivers of donation behaviour to understand why people do (or do not) donate to charities, especially to international development charities. His published titles include: “Who behaves charitably? Evidence from a global study (2024)”, “On generosity in public good and charitable dictator games (2024)”, “Deadlines and Procrastination (2022)”, “Are educational gender gaps a brake on economic development?
